Breeding
At the moment we have 19 horse of
different ages in Lundur. The breeding is small-scaled, so one to four
foals are born each year. Most of our horses are bred out of three mares,
Blesa, Stjarna and Kvika, who were bought from Mınes, a neighbouring
farm. The stallions that we have used are some of the best stallions in
Iceland, for example Gustur frá Hóli, Huginn frá Hafsteinsstöğum, Hróğur
frá Refsstöğum, Oddur frá Selfossi and Glampi frá Vatnsleysu.

We
are not breeding and training horses for a living; it is just a hobby,
even though the horses are quite a few. Now and then, however, we sell
horses and some of them have been exported. If you are considering buying
an Icelandic horse, you are welcome to contact us to find out whether we
have a horse that would suite you.
Is this your horse?
The life of the horses in
Ludur
The
horses are grazing all summer and autumn in an area of several hectares of
old field and heather-grown land.
Horses in autumn.
Horses in the forrest.
In
the beginning of January the horses that are to be trained are brought
into the stables. All the other horses are also brought in to get
some vermifuge to get rid of worms, and their hooves are trimmed. During
the winters the horses that are not in use are staying in an area with
birch forest that gives shelter from the wind, and this is also closer to
the farm so that it is easier to transport the hey to them.
The horses are brought inside.
In the winters some young horses and mares
with their foals uses to stay in Lundur, but they go back home to their
owners in the spring when the lambs are born and the pastures are needed
for them.
When summer comes, the young horses that
have stayed inside for training are let out in the pasture again, but the
older horses are usually kept near the stables and used for riding during
the summer

A few years ago we renovated the stable.
In stead of the stalls we built ten boxes. We used plastic boards for
walls between boxes as well as to cover outer walls. On the floor we put penetrable
rubber mats with a rinsing system, the dunghill is in the basement.
Windows and the outer door were replaced as well. Earlier we had the roof
re-built.

with the new roof.
